Court litigation (civil litigation), is the standard method of dispute resolution, through the public, civil court system.
The process is governed by the rules of civil procedure. The large majority of cases are settled before trial.
Depending on the location and the nature of the matter, specialized court lists, such as the Commercial and Estates List in Toronto, are available. Judges hearing these matters are usually specialized. Proceedings on these lists can move quickly. Cases on the general lists move much more slowly.
